Lahore Qalandar vs Peshawar Zalmi

Lahore Qalandars will take on Peshawar Zalmi in the fifth match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), on 6 February, Saturday at Dubai International Stadium.

Where to watch

The match will start at 9:00pm PST. Live coverage of the game is available in the Pakistan on PTV and GEO super

Overview

Lahore Qalandars had a day to forget on Friday. The team to beat, as they are billed, were rocked by a Mohammad Amir hat-trick, eventually losing by seven wickets. A lot was expected from Chris Gayle, but the big hitting West Indian failed to click, falling for four in the first over of the game. The bowling too looked listless, an area the Lahore outfit will be particularly worried about. Azhar Ali would not want to make too many changes, this being just their second game. However, if their batsmen do not perform, the Qalandars will struggle to get points on board.

Shahid Afridi would be a happy man, as despite not playing to their full potential, Peshawar Zalmi managed to beat Islamabad United by 24 runs. Tamim Iqbal, Wahab Riaz and Shaun Tait made important contributions while local boy Mohammad Asghar put in a match-winning performance with three wickets to take home the man-of-the match award. No changes are expected with the same line-up set to start.

Quetta Gladiators Vs Karachi King

Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings, with their tails up after a splendid win in their respective first Pakistan Super League matches, are set for a top of the table clash in Dubai International Stadium on Saturday.

Quetta, who defeated one of the favourites, Islamabad United, on Thursday, will be eager to see off Karachi Kings and stand on top of the table with four points. If they manage to come up with a similar performance like they did against Islamabad, Quetta would probably emerging triumphant.

Opener Luke Wright, who scored an incredible 53-ball 86, will be asked to provide another flying start against Karachi. They have some quality batsmen in their line-up. Kevin Pietersen coming into bat at number three followed by Mohammad Nawaz, Sarfaraz Ahmed and others makes Quetta one of the strongest batting team in the competition. Pietersen will have a point to prove after failing with the bat in his first PSL game.

However, these batsmen are set to be tested by the Karachi bowlers. With top bowlers such as Mohammad Amir, Sohail Tanvir, Shakib-Al-Hasan and others, an interesting contest is on the cards. Amir should be even confident to dislodge these batsmen after taking the first hat-trick of the PSL.

Karachi may be devoid of world-class batsmen compared to Quetta, but they have some quality players in their ranks to deliver for the team as was witnessed on Friday. Lendl Simmons played a huge hand in helping Karachi get off to a bright start with an unbeaten 62 runs from 46 balls to chase down Lahore’s score of 125 runs.

Besides Simmons, they also have the services of Shakib and Shoaib Malik in the middle order, which lends them the much-needed solidity. They will have to be careful against the Quetta bowlers, which includes Anwar Ali, Zulfiqar Babar and Umar Gul primarily.

On the other hand, Quetta will depend on Gul, who is one of the finest T20 bowlers in the world with a great yorker and an amazing mix of variety.

With both teams having won their first match, they will be eager to maintain their winning streak on Saturday, which makes the fourth match of the PSL even more interesting.

Mohammad Amir took a hat-trick for Karachi Kings

Mohammad Amir took a hat-trick for Karachi Kings in their Pakistan Super League victory over Lahore Qalandars.

The 23-year-old seamer, who was booed on his return for Pakistan in January after serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing, finished with figures of 3-27.

Amir removed Dwayne Bravo, Zohaib Khan and Kevon Cooper in the second game of the inaugural Twenty20 tournament.

Karachi chased 126 to win by seven wickets with 4.1 overs to spare after Chris Gayle made six in Lahore’s 125-8.

Amir was released from prison in 2012 after serving half of a six-month sentence for his part in a spot-fixing scam also involving Pakistan team-mates Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif against England at Lord’s in 2010.

Following the explosive start to the inaugural Pakistan Super League, on 4 February, the Karachi Kings outfit led by Pakistani all-rounder Shoaib Malik will be looking to get off to a winning start of their own, when they take on Lahore Qalandar in the second game at Dubai.

The Karachi Kings have experienced T20 campaigners like Shakib-Al Hasan, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lendl Simmons in their ranks while the local presence is bolstered by the presence of Mohammad Amir and Sohail Tanvir. If the Kings are to get off to a winning start, the above names would need to be on top of their game.

Billed as the team to beat, the Lahore Qalandars led by Azhar Ali have a certain Chris Gayle in their team, who was at his imperious best in the recently concluded Big Bash League. Add Dwayne Bravo, Kevon Cooper, Yasir Shah and Abdul Razzaq to the mix and the Qalandars have a well balanced squad. Both sides have got special players and it will take something special to separate these two teams on the field.

Quetta Gladiators had an easy win

The Pakistan Super League has been hailed by many as a pipeline for young talent to break into the world stage and 21-year old left-arm spinning allrounder Mohammad Nawaz took the opportunity to do so in the tournament opener as his 4 for 13 set up Quetta Gladiators’ -wicket victory over Islamabad United in Dubai.

The Pakistan fans have had to wait years to have a T20 league of their own. An extensive opening ceremony made them wait some more and the match only began at 9.30 pm. Quetta’s captain Sarfaraz Ahmed opted to bowl and it proved a wise decision as his new-ball bowlers kept Islamabad tied down for much of the innings. None of the top five batsmen were able to cross 15 runs and Nawaz was responsible for dismissing three of them.

Nawaz has already been earmarked as a future prospect with Pakistan having turned out for the ‘A’ team in the recent series against England Lions at the ICC Academy ground in Dubai. He took 11 wickets from five matches and struck a half-century as well

Islamabad were 63 for 6 in the 15th over when their captain Misbah-ul-Haq (41 off 28) and Andre Russell (35 off 20) slammed 57 runs in 27 balls to lend some respectability to the total. Russell caned Umar Gul for three fours and a six in the 18th over and Misbah carved Anwar Ali, who had bowled a maiden to kickstart the PSL, for three fours in the 19th over.

Still a chase that was barely over run-a-ball asks very little of batsmen and when someone from the top order scores a half-century off 31 balls, the result becomes quite apparent. Luke Wright finished unbeaten with 86 off 53 balls with 11 fours and four sixes to wrap the match up with 24 balls to spare.
